Drunken Ship

Raegan Lane, Senior, Criminal Justice Major from Mansfield, TX

Waves rise higher and higher

crashing down,

like a bottle shattering against concrete.

Wind fills the sails pushing us out

further and further

into oblivion.

Men slipping in and out of the crowd,

bulging against young girls.

Wooden boards moan and

shift beneath crooked steps.

A finger grazes the chin of a girl,

entranced in his lustful eyes.

She can’t see it.

A moment of clarity

amidst the waves.

Locking eyes with the pair that

sit quietly, judging,

their hands clasped together.

The sea heaves again

rolling the ship side to side.

Up is down and down is up.

Trying to stay afloat.
