Creating

Sylvia Cheney-Irgens, Junior, Writing and Theatre Major from Fort Worth, TX

Lines and shapes.
That’s all there is to it.
Sketch, draw, erase.
Rinse and repeat.

There’s something coming to life under my hand.
I can start to see her now – first the jaw,
Now the nose, the mouth, the eyes.
Add the ears, the neck and shoulders,
A wisp of hair across her face.
Hi. It’s nice to meet you.

I’m like a god.
I’ve created something out of nothing.
I took these meaningless lines
That I redrew hundreds of times
And turned it into something that breathes.
That’s alive.

It’s okay if I mess up.
It’s part of the process, right?
We’re all just doing our best.
I mean, sometimes it’s so bad it’s funny.
I’m not laughing through the tears;
It’s fine it’s fine it’s fine.
We live and we learn.

And the important part is that.
I’m so much better than I used to be.
So all hail our beloved creator,
That mystical maker type – me.
